International man of mystery runs for governor

March 11, 2012 in Breaking News

20120311-175105.jpg

HELENA, Mont. — Republican Neil Livingstone’s biography reads like that of a real-life man of international intrigue, where big paydays and dealings with dictators are commonplace. Now the counterterrorism expert says he wants to leave all that behind to become Montana’s governor, where chairing the state land board and congratulating state football champions could count as an exciting day.

Livingstone lists his own exploits as exploring tunnels beneath the demilitarized zone separating the Koreas, fleeing from angry Nazis in Argentina, suffering interrogation in 1980s Libya and dining with Russian mafioso. He also says he was wrongly subpoenaed for gun running and involvement in the Iran-Contra affair. And that time he was on the yacht belonging to a swashbuckling pirate whose other guests included numerous hookers? He was on a mission, he says, securing private planes to spy on a foreign country.

Libyan documents leaked last year stated that Livingstone was among a small group seeking a multi-million dollar payday to help Moammar Gadhafi find a safe haven. Livingstone, who has been a vocal critic of Gadhafi, said he was trying to bring a quick end to the bloodshed. The deal was rebuffed by the Obama administration.

Mississippi Republicans Seek To Rewrite History In Social Studies Courses

March 11, 2012 in Breaking News

March 11, 2012

By Stephen D. Foster Jr.

Conservatives have made strong efforts in the past few years to rewrite textbooks and brainwash school kids with their own twisted version of history. Mississippi Republicans are the latest to attack education, and they plan to pass a bill in the legislature that would practically ban liberalism in class rooms and in textbooks.

According to the Mississippi Clarion Ledger, House Bill 1384 prohibits educators from teaching what Republicans call “any partisan agenda or philosophy,” but to hear some of them talk about the bill, what it really sounds like is that conservatives want to force instructors to teach history the way they see it.

House Education Committee Chairman John Moore (R) says Republicans are “trying to protect the history of our nation in its purest form,” which would normally sound like an innocent statement until you factor in that Republicans across the country have tried to rewrite textbooks to reflect their own unsupported claims about what the “purest form” of American history is.

According to conservative pseudo-historians, America was founded as a Christian state; slavery had nothing to do with the Civil War but was a good thing; the Civil Rights Movement was a communist movement; states have the right to secede; and the Founding Fathers were all Christians and conservatives. Oh, and they claim liberalism is inherently evil. I knew I missed one. So maybe this is still hard to believe. Well, another GOP lawmaker had this to say.

“Rep. Becky Currie, R-Brookhaven, a committee member, said she was aware of problems at her daughter’s school. Currie said a teacher took liberal viewpoints when discussing current events assignments, leading her to demand a conference with school authorities. “No matter which side of the coin you’re on, her teacher ended up going toward the liberal end,” Currie told the committee. “I was surprised she made it out of there, still believing the way she was taught at my house.””

Translation: ‘The teacher didn’t teach the class the way I teach my kid.’ It sounds to me that what Republicans really have a problem with is that liberalism is touched upon at school at all. If the teacher had slanted towards a conservative agenda, we wouldn’t even be hearing about this bill. The problem is, this is the word of one parent who also happens to have a political bias. Who is to say that her daughter didn’t just report that her teacher was presenting the Civil Rights Movement or women’s rights or the New Deal, all of which are historical events steeped in the liberal movement of the early 20th Century. Maybe the teacher stated accurately that Franklin Roosevelt is one of America’s greatest Presidents. Who is to say the daughter isn’t just targeting her teacher in an attempt to get him fired? Perhaps Currie is just mad that the teacher didn’t present the events in a negative way like conservatives do.

While conservatives are throwing a hissy fit over the suspicious claims of one biased colleague, the Democrats have a different take on the bill. Democratic Rep. Rufus Straughter says he opposes the bill. “This is a bad bill. It’s unnecessary. Who determines what conservative is, what liberal is?” And Robert Townsend, deputy director of the American Historical Association, doubts the validity of the claims, saying that most history teachers have a hard enough time teaching the amount of material that the state curriculum requires without trying to find the time to inject personal views.

The fact is, this bill is about banning liberal history from being taught. If Republicans have their way, slavery, women’s rights, the Civil Rights Movement, the New Deal, and pretty much all of early 20th Century American history would be ignored or slanted to a conservative viewpoint. In other words, they will be presented in a hateful light. And here’s another point. Let’s say this bill is what the Republicans claim it is. How the hell does a history teacher address the conservative movement of the 1980′s in a non-partisan manner? I guarantee that if the teacher doesn’t glorify that decade, Currie will find out and then whine about it to her colleagues. Then what? Do we then get a law that says ‘teach in a non-partisan way unless you’re discussing Ronald Reagan and all the “good” things conservativism did?

While it’s apparent that many politicians engage in efforts to revise history, usually this is only in oral form. The efforts by the Republicans in Mississippi represent the first such effort to legislate revisionist history in America. I believe the last time anyone was successful at doing that on a grand scale was Adolf Hitler.

As a side note, I can see Mississippi trying to rewrite its own history about slavery and it might go something like this. During the Civil War, Mississippi was not pro slavery, the agricultural society of the day was simply trying to keep the evil north from eliminating the job “opportunities” which existed in the south at that time in history.

A Newt Religion for Gingrich: 3rd Time’s A Charm??

January 28, 2012 in Breaking News

It seems as though Newt Gingrich swaps wives as often as he does religions and his lack of commitment to either should not sit well with Americans seeking a person with dedication to duty. Not to mention a leader who isn’t morally all over the board.

Finding a Newt Religion

Born into a marriage that dissolved within weeks of his conception, Newton Leroy Gingrich (and yes that’s his full name, I checked) was raised Lutheran by his mother and stepfather, whose name he bears.

While studying history as a graduate student at Tulane University in New Orleans in the late 1960s, Newt Gingrich became intrigued by the impact religion has had on political theory and visited the nearby St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church to pose some questions to its pastor, who later baptized him.

From the 1970s until the 1990s, Newt Gingrich was officially a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, a megachurch, in south Atlanta, although he spent most of his time in Washington D.C.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Apparently as a Southern Baptist, the polls had him lost in the pack among the array of Baptist options in the republican fray and he opted to take yet another leap of faith to Catholicism.

It appears as though Mr. Gingrich still has several options....

While I think highly of the Catholic faith, I do think Newt is about as much Catholic as Charles Manson (and rest assured that Charles Manson isn’t claiming any conversion to Catholicism).

Your thoughts are welcome….

The Patronization of Patriotism: Dover AFB Scandal

January 16, 2012 in Breaking News, LEXFILES

Between 2003 and 2008 an something extremely disturbing was happening to our own US troops. It was not something happening at the hands of our enemies but in the very hands or at least under the very noses of an administration that purported to hold the highest ideals of faith, family and patriotism in the highest regard. This administration was indeed known as the Bush administration.  It has been revealed that between 2003 and 2008, the remains of U.S. troops who paid the ultimate sacrifice and died for their country were dumped in landfill.

They love to say we love our soldiers but do they really?

Where is the outrage? If this had happened under Obama...

In December 2011, this number was reported to be 274 but since then has continued to climb and the Army said it was initially unable to tell how many of the soldiers’ bodies, repatriated from Iraq and Afghanistan, had been part of the process that has been a national scandal for America.

WMI donates millions to political campaigns annually

It has now been revealed that the remains of at least 274 troops – comprising 976 body fragments -  that could not be identified or were later recovered from the battlefield were incinerated and sent to a landfill site in Virginia, operated by Waste Management Inc.

Who will be held accountable?

Fallen soldiers deserve better than this...

When the families of the dead authorized the military to dispose of the remains respectfully and with dignity they certainly had no idea that such “dignity” included having their remains dumped in landfill.

According to The Washington Post, Air Force officials claim they don’t know when the practice began but that its first record of such a procedure was on February 23, 2004. The secretive practice which ran for five years, between 2003 and 2008, when the remains of some 6,300 dead soldiers passed through Dover Air Base mortuary.

+

The scandal is the latest to hit the military base which receives all America’s war dead and prepares them for burial.

It was earlier revealed that the unlawful harvesting of body parts belonging to deceased soldiers had been occurring. Many limbs were lost or sawed off without the family’s permission.

An alarming report found that an arm bone belonging to a dead marine was hacked off without asking his parents by staff at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

An ankle and some soft tissue went unaccounted for due to ‘gross mismanagement’ and may have been mixed in with the remains of other soldiers.

Whistleblowers also claimed that the fetal remains of dependents of military personnel were also being shipped from Germany back to the U.S. in cardboard boxes that had already been used.

The scandal at Dover Air Force base began after complaints by three whistleblowers – civilians who worked as embalmers or technicians – who sparked an 18-month investigation by the Air Force Inspector General.

A separate probe was carried out by the Office of Special Counsel, an independent federal investigative agency which looks into claims by whistleblowers.

As of the this date, no one has yet to be held accountable…..

If this had happened under Obama’s watch, the cries by the far right on every available frequency would be calling for him to be drawn and quartered. As it happened on Bush’s watch, the silence and absence at even a hint of such clamoring is deafening.

While General George S. Patton’s quote reads,

“The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his.”

Chicken Hawks

I have to think that the Chicken hawks who largely ran for cover when any call of duty came their way  would rephrase it a bit to read as follows:

“The object of war is not to die for your country but to make some other poor sap do it for you.”

“In closing, I would like ask for any of those reading this who hold those serving in the defense of this great nation in high regards to please share this article.”

Hostess Bankruptcy Begs the Question: Should We Bail Out the Twinkie?

January 14, 2012 in Breaking News

The maker of snack cakes including Twinkies, Ho Hos, and DingDongs has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. But a company spokesperson has assured that production of the famous cream-filled treat will continue as usual for now.

“Throughout the proceeding, we’re going to operate business as normal,” said Hostess spokesman Erik Halvorson, according to CNNMoney. “They’ll keep making Twinkies.”

Hostess declared bankruptcy for the first time in 2004, and didn’t emerge until 2009, an unusually long time for the situation. Even more unusual is the second Chapter 11 filing (or “Chapter 22,” in some legal circles) so soon after.

Given that stuffing whipped beef fat into overly processed golden spongy goodness seemed like the perfect business model, Hostess blames unions and pension plans for their latest troubles.  but many critics point the finger at the company’s “failure to freshen up a stale product line and keep up with consumers’ changing tastes”, as the Washington Post puts it.

But even if Hostess doesn’t survive this crisis, there’s a good chance that Twinkies will live on. Defunct companies can still sell of their intellectual property, like a brand name; and as CNN reports elsewhere, potential buyers were already looking in to the possible value of the iconic snack titles: Buyers have made multi-million dollar bets on brand names like Polaroid, Sharper Image and even Borders that continue to resonate with consumers even after the parent company has liquidated.

ATM TRUTH MACHINES??

January 14, 2012 in Breaking News

You know who’s wholly responsible for the downfall of the American economy? San Francisco-based Bank of America customers, that’s who. No, seriously. Why else would the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) deface 85 San Francisco BofA ATM’s like that?

According to a report by SFist, RAN hit up nearly 90 ATM’s last night, replacing the normal withdrawal options with a sticker overlay including options like:

  • Invest in coal-fired power plants
  • Foreclose on America’s homes
  • Bankroll climate change
  • Fund executive bonuses

According to the group, they’re attacking BofA ATM’s and turning them into “truth machines” because  BoA is bankrupting America.

A Quick Look at Filthy Rich Dictators

December 5, 2011 in Breaking News

…or as they prefer to be called <ahem> Heads of State.

While ousted Tunisian President Ben Ali reportedly has $1.5 billion in private bank accounts, prior to his departure from power, he still managed to make off with 1.5 tons of gold before fleeing the country.

Where do ousted dictators go?

Saudi Arabia

Fleeing his country from protests after 23 years of iron-fisted rule, Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali  has found haven in Saudi Arabia, a state which has a history of taking in toppled leaders.

Riyadh announced early on Saturday that “the Saudi government has welcomed President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and his family to the kingdom.”

In a palace statement carried by the official SPA news agency, it said the move was “out of concern for the exceptional circumstances facing the brotherly Tunisian people and in support of the security and stability of their country.”

Ben Ali’s plane landed overnight in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, a Saudi source said earlier.

By taking him in, the Saudis wanted to ‘defuse’ the tensions on the streets of Tunisia. It was certainly “not out of sympathy” for Ben Ali, said Mustafa Alani, research director at the Gulf Research Centre, a Dubai think-tank.

The Saudis had two options – either they “contribute to solving the problem by giving him refuge” or “let him stay in the country … (where) things would go from bad to worse,” said the analyst.

Ben Ali, renowned for cracking down on Islamists, had to finally settle in ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia as he was refused asylum by one of his closest allies, France.

“It might be ironic for a person who fought the hijab (Muslim women’s head cover) to end up being given asylum in an Islamic state,” said Riad Kahwaji, head of the Dubai-based Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis.
“His wife will have to live veiled, under the law there,” he said.

In a post on Saudi news website sabq.org, one reader wrote: “Only now does the dictator who fought religion and the religious get to know the land of the two holy shrines (Mecca and Medina) … You and your wife are not welcome.”

“We hope the kingdom will help us bring this man (Ben Ali) to justice, if needed,” said another post under the name of “citizen” on the Dubai-based and Saudi-owned alarabiya.net news website.

However, Ben Ali had to accept “a long list of conditions” before the secular leader was given asylum in Saudi Arabia, including being “shut out of the media and out of politics,” according to Alani.

Several other leaders who found refuge in Saudi Arabia were taken under the same conditions, said Abdul Aziz al-Sager, chairman of the Gulf Research Centre.

After slaughtering up to 500,000 people in his country, he retired to Saudi Arabia...where he died peacefully in his sleep.

Until his death in 2003, Uganda’s ex-president Idi Amin Dada spent more than two decades in exile in the oil-rich kingdom, kept away from politics and the media.

Saudi Arabia, whose law allows for political asylum in public interest cases, also granted asylum to ex-Pakistani premier Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted by Pervez Musharraf and sent into exile in 2000 before returning in 2007.

“Sharif was not allowed to carry out any political activity in Saudi Arabia. When he decided to return to politics, he left Saudi Arabia,” said Sagr.

Both Ani and Sagr agreed that the ousted president and his family were unlikely to stay long in the Gulf monarchy. “His lifestyle will not fit in with the kingdom,” said Sagr.

NASA Says Nuclear Warfare Could Reverse Global Warming

October 27, 2011 in Breaking News

Time to cut NASA’s funding…

NASA Scientists have tested the climate effect of what a small, regional nuclear war would do to the world and have come up with a few revealing (and quite scary) conclusions. For the purpose of the exercise, NASA termed a small, regional nuclear war as 100 Hiroshima-level bombs.

What’s interesting is that the exploded bombs would kick up roughly five million metric tons of black carbon into the upper part of the troposphere and lead to a drop in temperature, which technically reverses that global warming thing Al Gore always talks about.

After a regional nuclear war, though, average global temperatures would drop by 2.25 degrees F (1.25 degrees C) for two to three years afterward, the models suggest.

Hey, that actually doesn’t sound so bad! But then there’s the downside of that drop in temperature. NASA says:

“Our results suggest that agriculture could be severely impacted, especially in areas that are susceptible to late-spring and early-fall frosts. Examples similar to the crop failures and famines experienced following the Mount Tambora eruption in 1815 could be widespread and last several years”

That volcano eruption led to “the year without summer”, which led to famine. No summer? That doesn’t sound good at all. Let’s hope that even these “small and regional” nuclear wars never happen so we never have to find out if NASA is right. [National Geographic]

Saudi Arabia Says Protest Here Won’t Be Tolerated

March 5, 2011 in Breaking News

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Demonstrations won’t be tolerated in Saudi Arabia and its security forces will act against anyone taking part in them, the Interior Ministry said Saturday, a day after about 100 members of the Shiite minority staged a protest in an eastern region of the kingdom.

The warning was another attempt by Saudi Arabia to get ahead of the unrest that has swept the Arab world in recent months. Last week, the government announced an unprecedented economic package worth an estimated $36 billion that will give Saudis interest-free home loans, unemployment assistance and debt forgiveness.

The Interior Ministry statement said the kingdom bans all demonstrations because they contradict Islamic laws and society’s values, adding that some people have tried to go around the law to “achieve illegitimate aims.”

Security forces were authorized to act against anyone violating the ban, the statement said.

The demonstration followed Friday prayers in the eastern town of Hofuf when the Shiites demanded the release of detainees, including Tawfiq al-Amer, a Shiite cleric who was arrested last week after he called for a constitutional monarchy.

On Feb. 24, a group of influential intellectuals urged King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia’s 86-year-old monarch, to adopt far-reaching political and social reforms. They said Arab rulers should learn from the uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, and listen to the voice of disenchanted young people. The group includes renowned Islamic scholars, a female academic, a poet and a former diplomat.

While oil-rich Saudi Arabia has been mostly spared the unrest in the Middle East, a robust protest movement has risen up in its tiny neighbor, Bahrain, which like others around the region is centered on calls for representative government and relief from poverty and unemployment.

A Facebook page calling for a “March 11 Revolution of Longing” in Saudi Arabia has begun attracting hundreds of viewers. A message posted on the page calls for “the ousting of the regime” and lists demands including the election of a ruler and members of the advisory assembly known as the Shura Council.

There are no government figures in Saudi Arabia that provide a national income breakdown, but analysts estimate there are more than 450,000 jobless. About two-thirds of the population is under 29 – and many of them chafe under the harsh religious rules that keep the sexes largely segregated.

Man Reportedly Blows Himself Up at Russian Supermarket

February 26, 2011 in Breaking News

Clean up on aisle two….

MOSCOW — A man blew himself up with a grenade near a supermarket in Moscow on Saturday, Russian news agencies said. No other injuries were reported.

Police had no immediate official comment and reports from unidentified witnesses and police sources gave contradictory accounts of the blast in northeastern Moscow that killed the man. There was no immediate indication of whether the blast was intended as a terrorist act.

The Interfax news agency cited witnesses as saying the man drove alongside a supermarket, got out of the car and went up to the store’s entrance muttering unintelligibly, then pulled out the grenade and set it off. Other reports said he was either in the car or next to it.

A suicide bomber killed 37 people in a Jan. 24 blast at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport, the country’s busiest. A leader of Islamist insurgents in Russia’s Caucasus claimed responsibility for ordering that attack.
